2022 – Hopeful!
Hello All,
I am writing a titch early because no doubt I will be fast asleep when the ball falls in Times Square! Bob and I were laughing earlier about the fact that we have never really been New Year’s revelers. It has usually been a low-key event for us. Probably had something to do with working in healthcare, and either working or being on call. Or the fact that I love to sleep!
It is amazing that at the end of last year I was writing about the same things I am writing about this year. Covid still abounds (variant number who knows what) – masks are still in favor (well, cloth masks are out, and the N94s and N95s are now favored for everyone) – vaccines are still being discussed (I have now had 3 and expect a 4th one will eventually be needed) – civil unrest continues – and incivility is, unfortunately, becoming more normalized.
Though that sounds sort of doom and “gloom-ish”, I am headed into 2022 with hope! I know I am a little bit of a Pollyanna. However, the scientists continue to work diligently to find solutions to diseases of all kinds – and great strides are being made. Who knew the masks I wore when I was in the hospital would become fashion forward? (Really! N94s come in colors now!) I am hoping that we all come to our senses and realize that we are the same, regardless of our skin color/gender/ethnicity/etc., and that we are in it together. And that kindness returns. As the great Dalai Lama said, “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”
I am also hopeful as I watch the younger generations (now that I am officially old…..well, at least in age!) actually talk about issues that are important and then look at solutions. The climate and global warming – racial inequities – accepting people where they are vs. preconceived notions of where or who they “should” be – the importance of mental health – the importance of family, embracing a very large and encompassing definition of family. I think our future is in good hands.
I have many hopes for you in 2022. Peace of mind. Good health. Strength of spirit, because even a Pollyanna knows not all days are good. The unfailing sense that things are going to work out. The knowledge that you are enough. The belief that you make a difference in the world, because you do. Laughter – with at least one great big belly laugh a day. Joy. Hugs. Great experiences to create great memories. Cat or dog kisses. The love of family and friends – because that makes it all worthwhile. (And marshmallows!)
Happy New Year! Here’s to our best year yet.

Happy New Year to you and Bob, and Little Mom. When I think of kindness, I think of you. I remember that day in Vegas when you paid for that couple’s high tea without their knowledge. Now I ask myself, what woul Phyllis do? One of many reasons I love you.
